- Student MUST be a Nurse Assistant (NA)1 prior to working as a Med Aide in NC, but does NOT have to be a NA to take the class
This is a 24 clock hour State Approved course involves class and lab practice. Medication Aides under state regulations, will learn to safely prepare, administer and document on medications via the approved routes, understand and apply the six rights for medication administration, how to address special circumstances for administering medications: such as cutting medications, learn how to administer medications to patients with difficulty swallowing. The student will learn of the different forms of medications and their administration to patients. Students will understand and learn patient rights, including confidentiality and the right to know and refuse medications, preventive measures to avoid errors, reporting errors, proper documentation of medication the MAR (Medication Administration Record), and infection control measures. As a Medication Aide, you can administer medications to adults and children. Medication Aides duties include: controlled substance counts and safety, auditing/inventory systems and the disposal of unused or contaminated medications. As a Medication Aide student, you will have knowledge of medical terminology and commonly used abbreviations in the healthcare field. Students must score a minimum of 90 on the final exam. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the N.C. State Board Medication Aide Exam for skilled nursing homes.
